Set up in 1992, this non-profit organization provides basic health care, vocational training and community solutions for the indigenous Q’eqchi Maya in and around the rain forest in eastern Guatemala. It is exceptional by the fact the democratically-elected board is entirely indigenous and the charity works to improve equality for Maya women and girls, to promote cultural pride and youth empowerment. Indeed, many of the students educated by Ak’ Tenamit gain valuable hospitality and tourism work experience at its site and in the restaurants in Livingston. On the RÃo Dulce/Livingston trip many of the public lanchas make the detour to the site and it is worth taking a look round, especially its souvenir shop for some great handmade crafts. You can also donate on line or arrange to sponsor a student.
