V!VA User‘s Description
Livingston is a small town located where the Rio Dulce empties into the Atlantic Ocean at the Bay of Amatique. Historically isolated, Livingston is becoming an important visitor destination as travelers journey there to relax, dance and soak up a Caribbean vibe.
The inhabitants of Livingston are the descendents of escaped slaves and natives of the Lesser Antilles, who made their way to parts of the Central America coast by means of the Bay Islands in Honduras. They honor their slave heritage with the wanaragua or John Kunnu dance, in which dancers clad in ornate costumes and white masks make fun of slaveholders. The wanaragua festival takes place around Christmas and in early January.
Livingston’s greatest natural attraction is Los Siete Altares, or “the seven altars.” It is a series of waterfalls and pools along a small river through a lush forest. They are located about an hour’s walk from town along the beach to the north.
