Quiriguá - Other Activity Puerto Barrios - Guatemala

The town of Quiriguá is small and unremarkable. The only reason to come by here is perhaps to pick up transport or pass some time after visiting the ruins and before moving on – it is a three-kilometer (1.9 miles) walk back along the road from the ruins and then you follow the disused train tracks west to the town. It would be preferable to visit the ruins earlier in the day and then move on to stay in Denny’s Beach in Mariscos, Río Dulce or Puerto Barrios, for example, where there is more accommodation choice and a lot more to do. If you do want to stay there is one decent hotel and a few eating options.

A steep cobbled stone road winds off the CA-9 highway into Quiriguá town center, about 3 kilometers from the ruins. If you follow the road on the opposite the side of the grassy square to the church you will find: Librería Karen; Hotel y Restaurante Royal; Farmacia Eloi; Antojitos Benyelf; Pan y Pastel Lido; a couple of beauty salons; and Librería Joseth with Internet, phones and faxes and a video games room.

The red and yellow Hotel y Restaurante Royal is a good place to stay. The owners are very welcoming and as there is no specific restaurant menu they will make you what you want from the fresh produce available that day, including veggie options, seafood, meat and pasta and even deliver your dinner to your room. The rooms have private bathrooms with hot water, fans, big beds, T.V.s. There is a nice terrace outside the rooms with views of the church and chairs to relax on and a laundry service available. There are also some cheaper rooms at the back of the hotel but without windows. Rates are negotiable but around Q75/$9.50 per person. Dollars but not credit cards accepted. Calle Principal, Tel: 502-5797-8788/7947-3639.

All buses going between Puerto Barrios and Guatemala City, traveling on the CA-9, pass by the turn-off for Quiriguá town, which is a different turn-off to that which goes to the Quiriguá ruins and the banana plantation (two kilometers nearer Puerto Barrios). There are usually mini buses and motorbikes at this junction for lifts to the town (the same goes for the turn off for the ruins).
