If you're looking to escape Guatemala City and have already crossed Antigua and Tikal off your list, visit the Atlantic Coast of Guatemala. Along the Atlantic Coast, you will find a handful of sleepy towns on black sand beaches. There is a lot to see and do in this part of Guatemala, where Caribbean and Guatemalan cultures mix together. However, you will need a place to stay.
In tiny towns like Jutiapa and El Estor, hostels are dingy and hard to find, whereas in Livingston, Chiquimula, and Esquipulas they are a dime a dozen. Along the Rio Dulce you will also find a whole host of options.
