Safety

Tourism is a huge source of income in some towns in the Oriente and along the Atlantic Coast, which means many locals who make their living this way can be quite aggressive. For example, the only way to reach Livingston is by boat, and once you arrive you will be approached by a crowd offering you—or possibly harassing you about—a place to stay. Your best option is to be polite but firm: say you have reservations (even if you do not), and no matter which hotel you end up staying at the proprietor will be much happier not having to pay one of these street vendors a fee. As always, although most towns in this area are generally safe, it is also never advised to walk around alone—especially at night.
