El Mirador

Ancient El Mirador lies in the most remote wilderness of El Petén, Guatemala´s most rugged region. The ruins in this area are said to be much older than those of Tikal, and they indicate a much higher level of sophistication than previously believed for the Maya at this time (around 600 B.C. to 150 A.D.). The actual El Mirador site is connected to 25 other smaller cities by a network of raised causeways that stretch for miles through dense Guatemalan jungle. The entire city of El Mirador takes up about 60 square kilometers (37 sq. miles), and the smaller satellite cities (many of them older than their larger counterpart) are spread out in a network hundreds of kilometers in area..

The trek to the El Mirador area is extremely difficult and only manageable by healthy, hearty hikers during the dry season. Otherwise, the trail can turn into shoulder deep mud, making the hike nearly impossible. The trek lasts between three to four days, and covers 70 (square?) kilometers (need square miles) of dense, mean jungle with no amenities except the contents of your backpack. Expeditions leave from a small settlement called Carmelita, which is already very remote, so don't expect to stock up on supplies here. However, during the dry season the trek is doable, and you will be rewarded by seeing a place that very few others have (at least in these times—the peak population of El Mirador is said to have been over 100,000).
