Ak’Tun Kan Caves - Monument Flores - Guatemala

If you don’t have time to visit the caves in Alta Verapaz or south of Petén, you might want to visit the Ak’Tun Kan Caves, two kilometers north of Flores. You’ll crawl yourself through the earth’s belly in order to observe curious figures sculpted by nature. In the Mayan language, the name means “cave of the serpent” from a legend about a giant snake living in the caves. To get there, walk north out of Santa Elena on 6 Avenida or take a Tuk Tuk there for $2. Open every day 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., the entrance costs $2.50. There is no light in the caves so bring a flashlight. Giant snake not included.
