Sunset Tour of Tikal

Ruin, Cultural Tour, Hiking

By Will Gray

.

The main reason to take this tour is to get to stay in the park up until sunset, so don't expect to be overloaded by information from your guide. Beginning at either the car park or the site of Perdido del Mundo (Lost World), you climb the lofty pyramid for a great view over Tikal's towers and the surrounding jungle.

Since Temple I closed for climbing this is the best spot to watch the sun go down as it does so to the left of Temple IV. The guide then steers you to Temple II to climb and look at the moonlit Temple I then leads you out by torchlight. This is basically a surcharge for sunset masquerading as a tour, but it is the only way to see it unless you avoid the glare of the wardens.
