History of Flores

Flores was founded on an island by the Itzaes who came here after being expelled from Chichen Itza in Mexico in the 13th century. They founded the city of Tayasal. In 1525, Hernan Cortez made a visit to the town where he left his wounded horse. The Maya, having never set an eye on a horse before, didn’t know how to treat the strange creature and the horse died. They erected a statue in honor of the wounded horse. It became an idol until it was destroyed by the Franciscans 100 years later. The Spanish, who eventually conquered Tayasal in 1697, had ignored the Mayan city for almost 200 years–probably because of its remote location. Tayasal became the last Indian city to fall under Spanish rule. Two years later, the Spanish moved to Flores and built a fort.
