Naachtung – Dos Lagunas Biotope

The Dos Lagunas Biotope mainly attracts tourists for its amazing wildlife and its well-preserved Mayan ruins. If the site looks like untouched by time, it is because of its remote location and the absence of roads. The area in which the Biotope is situated forms a connection between El Mirador and Río Azul, inside the National Park.

The Dos Lagunas Biotope abundant wildlife makes it a unique spot for visitors: many of Guatemala's endangered species can be observed there, including jaguars and other jungle cats such as marguays and ocelots, brocket deer, crocodiles, river turtles, monkeys, tapirs and more.
The flora diversity is considered to be the highest in the region, with a high concentration of Mahogany trees.

The Biotope also hosts Naachtung, a Late Classic Mayan site. Its architecture shows a strong influence from larger Mayan cities: Tikal and Calakmul. It is believed that Naachtung was caught in the war between the two rival cities. Located 25km east of El Mirador and 1km from the Mexican border, Naachtung displays more than 45 stelae.

The Biotope, managed by Guatemala's University of San Carlos Center for Conservation Studies (CECON), was originally created to protect the endangered white-tailed deer. The center decided not to promote tourism in the reserve, explaining why The Dos Lagunas Biotope remains like a secret
treasure, off the beaten tourist trail.
