Sierra Del Lacandón National Park

Sierra del Lacandón is located in a mountain chain in the western part of Petén, on the northern bank of the Usumacinta river. The area, elevated at 600 meters above the sea level, is surprisingly well-preserved: during the Guatemalan civil war, soldiers hid in the mountains, protecting the site from
looters and environmental degradation.

The park hosts the largest population of jaguars in all Central America. Its jungle also shows an amazing diversity. In the forest, several Mayan sites can be visited. The most important of them is Piedras Negras, situated on the shore of the Usumacinta River. The site has some of the best carved monuments from the Mayan world. Its remoteness makes you feel like a
privileged visitor.

Yaxchilán is one of the most important Mayan site in the area, as the city used to dominate trade on the Usumacinta river. Several temples can be observed there. Bethel is a pretty village, often considered as the starting point for tourists who want to visit the Park's ruins or to head towards Mexico.

Most of the boats heading to the different Mayan sites, going
downstream the Usumacinta river, depart from here. A good place to stay is the Posada Maya, offering accommodations in bungalows and a restaurant. It is also here that visitors will be able to book tours for a decent price.

Few of the sites and trekking trails in the jungle can be visited alone. You will find that most of the time, visitors have to book tours that include a guide. Several agencies, located in Flores, El Remate and San Andrés offer packages for day-trips to those sites. Some Free-lance guides can take you to the sites for a cheaper price, but those generally know little about the sites and responsible tourism.

Other neighborhoods in Naachtung – Dos Lagunas Biotope: Laguna Del Tigre National Park and Las Guacamayas Biological Research Station.
