Poptun

One hundred kilometers (62 mi.) south of Flores, Poptún is a small town of 20,000 inhabitants. Nestled 600 meters (1,970 feet) up in the foothills of the Mayan mountains, Poptun has a cooler, more appealing climate than the rest of the region, which has made it a popular stop-off point for foreigners and locals alike. The landscape is marked mostly by pine forests.

The first inhabitants were the Mayan Mopanes and the Queckchies from Cahabon, Alta Verapaz. This was a center of government activity during the civil war, though things have long-since returned to normal in the region. The main industries were ranching and the extraction of the resin from the Chicopazote trees to make gum. People dedicate themselves to cattle farming and logging pine, mahogany and cedar trees.

Most people visit here to visit Finca Ixobel, the best accommodation choice in the area and an important stop on Guatemala's gringo trail. If you have only one day in Poptun, visit the fascinating caves of Naj Tunich, and then spend the rest of the day relaxing at Finca Ixobel. If you have more time, you can go horseback riding, rafting or explore the other nearby caves.

Other places nearby Poptun: Soloma, San Pedro Soloma, Ixlu Flores, Lake Atitlan, El Remate, San Andres, San Jose, Sayaxché, Santa Elena and Remote Mayan Sites.
