Naj Tunich Caves - Other Activity Poptun - Guatemala

The caves of Naj Tunich, thirty five kilometers east of Poptun, are unique for their Mayan murals showing religious ceremonies, ball games and erotic scenes, which are not found anywhere else in the Mayan world. The name means “Paintings on a humid area,” and there is evidence of activity from the Pre-classic to the Classic Period (between 100 to 900 AD).

The caves played an important role in the life of the Mayas. Theyserved as a hiding place and later as a sacred place with doors to the afterworld. It was also a place for pilgrimage with people coming from very far. The caves were closed in 1984 because of vandalism. In 2004, a painter from Guatemala City came to do a reproduction of the murals in a nearby cave, which is open to the public. For now, visitors can can only see the entrance of the original caves. There is no public transport to the site, but Finca Ixobel can organize tours.
