Overview San Jose

A few kilometers west of San Andres, San Jose has one of the best beaches on the lake. The majority of its 2000 inhabitants are descendants of the Maya from Chichen Itza. The town was founded in a place known as Ixtutz, which means “place populated with corozo trees,” and renamed San Jose in 1851. The economy is based on agriculture and tourism. San Jose is a nice place to relax on the beach away from the tourists.
