Situated on the southern bank of the Río de la Pasión, this busy town is more of a base from which to visit surrounding attractions rather than a place to see in itself. It is also used by people traveling between the Cobán area and Flores as a place to stop and rest for a night. Sayaxché doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to safety; incidents of robbery, although less than a few years ago, are reported. However, there are half a dozen or so decent Mayan sites in the vicinity so if you want to visit those, then a stay in Sayaxché is convenient more than anything. There are several hotels in the town, all reasonably priced at around $10-20 a night for a private room. They are not luxury establishments but are generally comfortable and clean. There are also one or two nice dining options in Sayaxché. To get to one such café you have to cross the river but the views, privacy and tasty local food are worth it. Another eatery will prepare packed lunches on request, ideal for those heading out sightseeing for the day. In terms of services, there is a Banrural located just up the street from the popular Hotel Guayacán where you can change US dollars and traveler’s checks.
