Safety

Traveling is inherently dangerous, so be careful to never let you guard down. In Guatemala, over 70 percent of the population lives in poverty, so as a traveler you are an easy target for robbery. Remember to never leave your personal items unattended, and do not wear any flashy jewelry or showoff any expensive electronics you may be carrying. If anyone ever tries to rob you, the best thing to do is just give the thief what her or she is looking for. To reduce your risk of becoming a target, never travel alone, especially at night.
