This maze of residential palaces and small temples is found on the south side of Gran Plaza. Believed to be where the royal family and their relatives lived, some chambers still have remnants of low platforms which served as beds. The tiny rooms are believed to be sacred ritual sites, with graffiti bearing evidence. Out of the 45 buildings in the complex, the Maler Palace was used by one of the pioneering archaeologists, Teobert Maler, as his residence between 1895 and 1904. You can still see his signature on the door jambs of the main entrance.
