The bigger of the two museums in Tikal, Museum Lítico houses the important stelae excavated from the within the ancient temples. It displays imposing carved rocks, with interpretations of what the illustrations mean. Explanations of the Mayan hieroglyphics also give an interesting insight into their literary world. Photographs taken during each step of the discovery by Alfred Mausdlay and Teobert Maler in the 19th century are worth a look. Located inside the visitors’ center, you can easily take an hour to explore this museum when the sun is the strongest. No photos are allowed in the museum. Beside the museum, there is a big 3D model of how Tikal would have looked around AD 800.
