Biotopo El Zotz-San Miguel La Palotada - Ruin Uaxactun - Guatemala

Completely un-restored and barely excavated, El Zotz is a Mayan archeological site, located thirty kilometers (19 mi.) west of Tikal. An important Classical Maya city, El Zotz was never ruled by Tikal, despite its proximity. Rather, inscriptions at the site point to a connection with El Perú in the north. El Zotz earned its name from the large number of bats living within the site's cliffs. Each night around sunset, ten of thousands of bats exit the caves en masse creating a spectacular sight.

The site is part of San Miguel La Palotadad National Park, on the border with the Tikal Park. The ruins are divided into four main groups: the north, the central, the south and El Diablo, which is the highest temple and views of the Tikal ruins. The monumental architecture includes49 large structures, including four pyramids, several palaces, a ball court and four chultuns, pehaps used as water reservoirs. The last mention of the site is from Tikal in 744 AD, in the context of a conquest war against Naranjo.

To get to El Zotz, it is best to organize your trip with a tour agency. It can be combined with Tikal, or you can visit just El Zotz by making arrangements in Uaxactun.
