The town center of Cobán is relatively safe, as not many crimes against tourists have been reported. That said, travelers should avoid walking alone at night or flashing jewelry and valuables. Streets are usually deserted after 10 p.m.The outskirts of town should be avoided, as they tend to be more crime-prone. Isolated mugging incidents have been reported in Parque Las Victorias, so check with the tourist office before visiting alone. Alternatively, contact the Tourist Police, Disetur (Tel: (502) 5551-3992), located behind the Palacio de Gobernacíon, for assistance. When taking public transport, always keep an eye on your valuables. It is important to only take a registered taxi (with yellow sign).
