When to go

Set amid the cloud forests, Cobán is blessed with a cool, temperate climate. A misty drizzle, known among the locals as chipi chipi, occurs almost year-round and drenches the city in gloominess. Thanks to the annual rainfall of 3,500 mm, the hills are green and lush. The dry season (March to May) sees high temperatures, while the winter season (December to January) gets very cold and wet. With an average temperature of 19 degrees Celsius (66 degrees Fahrenheit), it is generally warm during the day. Temperatures drop drastically in the evenings, so bring a jacket. The most important festival in town, known as the Rabin Ajau folkloric festival, takes place in late July or early August every year. Mayan beauty queens from all over the country descend on the town to compete in their traditional outfits. An annual national orchid show is held here every December, when the country’s national flower Monja Blanca is in full bloom.
