Discovered only in 1992, this cave system is home to several intriguing stalagmite and stalactite formations. The journey through the caverns is an easy walk, suitable for all ages. Expect to creep through a narrow tunnel, and wade through a stream of rapids before getting to the impressive cave galleries. Giant formations here have been dubbed names like ‘the Twin Towers’ and ‘Leaning Tower of Pisa’. After the walk, visitors can dip into the refreshing waterfall nearby, Balneario Cecilinda. The caves stretch 1km into the earth, but don’t expect to reach the end during the one-hour guided tour. Entrance fee is $4.35 including a guide, helmet and boots. The only way to get there by public transport is to catch a microbus ($0.25) from San Juan Chamelco, followed by a 400m walk uphill. Alternatively, get a taxi from Cobán ($9.35 one way), or join a daytrip ($18.50) organized by the tour operators.
