Lying in the highlands 19 km west of Cobán, this Poqomchi’ Mayan village is the best place to find out more about the tribe that remains one of the smallest and oldest Mayan groups alive. Just off the main square, you can find Museo Katinamit (Entrance: $1.20), where their traditions, festivals and musical instruments come to life. Explanations of their costumes and hieroglyphics are in English and Spanish. The museum is set up by a non-profit organization, CeCEP (Centro Comunitario Educativo Pokomchi; which also runs the Aj Chi’ Cho Language Center ( Learn Poqomchi’ or Spanish and stay with a local family for $120 a week. The best time to visit is on 20th January, when the entire village celebrates the Feria de San Sebastián with masked processions and fire-ball games. To get there from Cobán, catch a bus ($0.65) from the corner of 7a Avenida and 2a Calle, Zona2.

Other neighborhoods in Cobán: Tactic, San Pedro Carchá, Balneario Las Islas, Grutas Rey Marcos, San Juan Chamelco and Sachichaj Waterfalls.
