When to go

It is more pleasant to visit Salamá in the summertime (November to May), and of course Semana Santa is spectacular, as in the rest of Guatemala, with processions and sawdust carpets leading up to the Calvario; and on May 3 a traditional dance is held for the Día de la Cruz. The patron saint of Salamá, San Mateo, is feted from September 17 to 22, with horse events, processions and lots of food and drinking.
