Behind San Jerónimo's church is the Museo del Trapiche, located on the grounds of Central America's first brown sugar mill. King Charles V demanded the mill be built in 1549, and soon 1,000 workers were producing 90 tons of processed sugar each year here.
Inaugurated in 1999, the Museo del Trapiche has a huge wheel—7 meters (23 feet) in diameter—on display. You can also see ruins from the aqueduct with 124 arches built to bring water to the farm. Also available for viewing are archaeological relics, popular art, and handicrafts. On site, there are barbecue grills where you can cook lunch. The museum is free to visitors.
