One of the country’s spectacular natural wonders, Semuc Champey captures the hearts of many, owing to its phenomenal beauty and jungle setting. The site is formed by the RÃo Cahabón, which flows under a 300 meter limestone bridge, above which the famous series of turquoise-colored pools have formed. These pools shimmer in various shades of green ranging from light turquoise to dark emerald. Perfect to cool off from the smoldering heat, the refreshing waters are crystal clear. Underwater, you will find many tiny fish swimming past and nibbling at your feet.
Because of its remote location 9 kilometers south of LanquÃn, Semuc
Champey's pristine pools are yet to be swamped with tourists. Although the pools are surrounded by thick forests, wooden walkways have been constructed to allow easy access. Follow the walkway towards the upper end of the pools, where the river starts flowing under the limestone bridge. The dangers of the rocky bottom and fast-flowing river have caused a couple of deaths. Swimming is prohibited in this area.
Some tour guides will lead you down, one pool at a time, until you arrive at the part where the river gushes ferociously from under the limestone bridge. From the last pool to the river, guides will bring you down a rope ladder through a waterfall. The rocks are extremely slippery here, and conditions are dangerous. Those who do attempt the descent should be warned of the risks involved.
For a picture-perfect view of Semuc Champey from above, there is a steep walkway that leads to the lookout point. The climb takes around 35 minutes each way, and can be somewhat difficult. Bring a bottle of water and boots for the climb.
Camping is allowed in the grounds although not advised due to possible flash floods. There are no restaurants or food stalls in the park, so be sure to bring your packed lunch if you are coming on your own.
Hotel Jam Bamboo (Tel: (502) 4549-9735; E-mail: cabralmariano@hotmail.com), located 2km from the pools, has a relaxed hippie vibe to it. Basic wooden bungalows house private rooms that are decent and clean. Prices here range from $3.75 to $7.50 per person. There is no hot water or TV, but internet is available. The staff jams on drums at night, which you will probably find either enchanting or incredibly annoying.
Another popular option is Las MarÃas (Tel: (502) 7861-2209) with similar lodging standards, but nearer to Semuc Champey. Built right along the river, you can take in the view while lounging at its restaurant. Prices here range from $3 for a dorm bed to $7.50 for a private room with bathroom.
To get to Semuc Champey, catch a microbus from the plaza in LanquÃn, which run more frequently in the morning. The bus schedule is flexible, so ask around for a better idea. Many tour operators in Cobán arrange daytrips ($37.50) that are excellent deals, considering the entrance fees and meals are included. Admission is $6.50 each.
