El Salto de Chilascó is what attracts hundreds of visitors to San Rafael Chilascó every year. This spectacular waterfall towers at some 130 meters, and is regarded by many as the highest waterfall in all of Central America. The local ecotourism association provides guides to the waterfall and will also rent out rubber boots and ponies for the hike. They charge 35Q ($4.30) each for the hike and the guide will cost you an additional 35Q. From the tourism center to the waterfall it's about 5km and the hike usually takes somewhere between 2-3 hours. The first 2km can be traveled by bicycle or vehicle but after that it's either on foot or by pony. Be sure to bring suitable clothing; trainers are fine in summer but for rainy weather, bring rain boots if you have them and a waterproof jacket. About 500m in, there is a much smaller waterfall caled El Saltito, which is a nice spot if you want to get in the water and relax for a while.
