The Verapaces Safety

While criminality is a serious problem in Guatemala as a whole, the Verapaces are far enough from the hot spot of Guatemala city, and from the narcotraffic of the Caribbean and of the Mexican border, to be considered relatively safe. Also, in this indigenous area, traditional forms of social control are still strong, meaning lower levels of delinquency. Still, the roads are not exempt from highway robberies, especially the Cobán-Petén section (which the police has been patrolling after a recent spate of incidents), so be careful if driving your own vehicle and don't travel by night. In the larger towns, take taxis at night, and always ask at your hotel where it is safe to walk on your own.
