Known as the ‘other Semuc Champey’ (the high mineral content gives the water its stunning emerald green color), Laguna Magdelena is rarely visited by tourists due to its inaccessibility. 35 kilometers (21 m) north of Huehue, on the high road to Paquix and El Mirador, look for the sign saying ‘Magdelena 18 km’, where the paved road ends and the 4X4 (or your feet) starts to work. There are no shops or hotels around here but you could ask for permission to camp. It is about 3200 meters (10,500 ft) above sea level so remember to pack warm clothes if you do and bring enough food and water. The air is beautifully fresh up her e and if you stay you’ll rewarded with stunning views of the night sky. Only attempt to hike to the Laguna if you’re in good shape.
