Cantel

Cantel is a small industrial town located east of Quetzaltenango and Zunil. It became one of the more important industrial suburbs when it contributed significantly to Quetzaltenango’s late 19th century period of prosperity. The Fábrica de Hilados y Tejidos de Cantel, which still exists today, started out in 1883 and began to combine European technology with the already popular weaving tradition to create good quality textiles. However, nowadays the town is better known for the Copavic Glass Factory. All of the beautiful hand blown glassware produced at the factory is made from recycled materials and much of it is exported around the world. As a place to visit there isn’t very much else to do but Cantel makes for a pleasant excursion out of the city.

Other neighborhoods in Quetzaltenango : Salcajá, Zona 3 Quetzaltenango, Almolonga, Fuentes Georginas, Los Vahos, Laguna Chicabal, Totonicapán, San Andrés Xecul, Las Cumbres and Xela.
