El Palmar Viejo

El Palmar Viejo is one of the more unusual tourist attractions to visit around Quetzaltenango. Back in the 1990’s the infamous Hurricane Mitch caused havoc in this little village and forced the inhabitants to resettle in a new village, El Palmar Nuevo. Since then, many of the ruins have become overgrown but it still makes for an interesting walk around. Behind the old village cemetery is a modern Mayan altar and the deep ravine that cut through the village, slicing the church in two, can now be crossed via some slightly unstable swing bridges. It is recommended that you take a guide with you rather than venture there alone as the area is quite remote. El Palmar Viejo is signposted off the road to Retalhuleu from Xela and is roughly 4km west from the main road.

Other neighborhoods in Quetzaltenango : Los Vahos, Zona 3 Quetzaltenango, Salcajá, Almolonga, Cantel, Xela, San Andrés Xecul, Totonicapán, Laguna Chicabal and Las Cumbres.
