Salcajá

Of all the small towns in the area, Salcajá is a rather uneventful place to visit. However, if you are passing by on your way Quetzaltenango there are a couple of things for which the town is known for. The first is the fact that it is home to Central America’s first Christian Church. Iglesia de San Jacinto is a typical old colonial church situated just two blocks west from the main road. Dating back to 1524, it boasts a pretty carved façade, an ornate altar and several paintings from the colonial era.

The other things for which Salcajá is known and are worth sampling are two fermented beverages. The first, caldo de frutas, is made from a combination of pears, apples, peaches and white cherries. The other popular drink, rompopo, is similar to eggnog and is made with egg whites, rum, sugar, crushed almonds, spices, vanilla and cinnamon. If you like them both enough to take with you, they can be bought in bottles from several of the local shops.

Other neighborhoods in Quetzaltenango : San Andrés Xecul, San Francisco El Alto, El Palmar Viejo, Zunil, Almolonga, Fuentes Georginas, Los Vahos, Zona 3 Quetzaltenango, Totonicapán and Xela.
