San Andrés Xecul

If you head west off the Pan American Highway at a crossroads between the turnoff for Salcajá and the Cuatro Caminos junction, you will find San Andrés Xecul. This small highland town of steep cobbled streets and adobe houses with tiled roofs is home to one of Guatemala’s most photographed churches, Iglesia San Andrés. Its ornate and colorful façade features some 250 carved enameled characters on a canary yellow background. Angels, saints and cherubs can be seen alongside tropical fruits sprouting from vines that adorn its many columns. Extracts from the façade are replicated in the woven huipils that many of the indigenous local women wear. At first, the church can appear somewhat bizarre but it is certainly worth a look.

The town holds a decent market on a Thursday, which takes place in the plaza outside the church and spreads into nearby streets. It isn’t a tourist orientated market as in many other highland towns, but it’s nice to walk around it for an hour and see how the locals trade. Besides a few marimba bands, there isn’t much else to see in San Andrés Xecul. Visitors usually spend an hour or two on their way elsewhere or on an excursion out of Quetzaltenango.

Other neighborhoods in Quetzaltenango : El Palmar Viejo, Las Cumbres, Almolonga, Salcajá, Zona 3 Quetzaltenango, Los Vahos, Totonicapán, Xela, Fuentes Georginas and Laguna Chicabal.
