This museum has been open on and off since 1999 and was closed until May 2006 to fit a new roof, which is now guaranteed for 40 years. It houses several of the key stelae and altars that were found at the site, including the impressive main altar carved with all 16 kings of Copan. Once re-opened it will be an important addition to the site and ensure a full day is needed to make the most of a visit.

Getting There
On the main ruins site
The museum has a dramatic entrance through a tunnel which you enter through the mouth of a serpent, as they did in time of the ancient Maya. The tunnel opens into an open courtyard with a full size replica of the famous Rosalila building. The sculptures are in a beautiful open air setting and the visitor can go read and walk through at his leisure. It is two floors.
