Getting to and away

By Mike Karanicolas

Copan has several terminals for buses heading in different directions. Travelers bound for Guatemala have the option of catching a bus on Calle 18 to the border. However, a much better option is to take a tourist minibus, booked through most travel agencies. There are two departures daily for Antigua (6 hours, $12), at 5:30am and 12:00pm. Travelers have the option of getting off in Guatemala City, or in Rio Hondo for buses to Rio Dulce.

If you're heading into Honduras, you're probably going northbound and your next stop is likely to be San Pedro Sula (3-4 hours). There are three companies in town offering buses there: Transportes Casasola, Rey Express, and Hedman Alas. Casasola and Rey Express have bus stations on Avenida Sesesmil, while Hedman's is further out on the southwest edge of town. Travel agencies in town should be able to confirm prices and times, which change frequently. At the time of writing, most departures left in the early morning and cost around 80-120 L.

A final option is to head north to La Entrada (2 hours, 40 L), a crossroads town offering connections to Santa Rosa, Gracias, and the El Salvadorian border. Buses leave frequently from a station on the south side of Calle Acropolis near the football field.
