Getting to and away

By Mike Karanicolas

This city is a major regional transportation hub, and if your travels involve the north or west of the country it's almost guaranteed that you'll need to go through San Pedro.

Many of San Pedro's transport companies have their own bus station, but nearly all also run through the main Terminal Metropolitana de Autobuses on 2a Ave. SE. From there you can catch buses to just about anywhere in Honduras. Times and fares vary with the season, and change rapidly, but the first bus to nearly every destination leaves at around 6 a.m. Each destination will be served by several different companies, but fares are pretty uniform. The last buses for most destinations, including La Ceiba (85 L, 3 hours, as of April 2008), Tegucigalpa (72 L, 4 hours), and Copan Ruinas (100 L, 4 hours) leave at 3pm. Tegucigalpa and Copan Ruinas are also served by first class buses for 280 L and 294 L, respectively. In addition to comfort, the main advantage of these buses is that their last departure is at 6pm, a good option if it's after three and you absolutely, positively, must get there today. There is also a company offering service to various destinations in Guatemala, Belize and Mexico. These buses leave at 6am, and tickets should be purchased at least half an hour prior to departure.

San Pedro also has the most modern airport in Honduras, and many travelers will fly into here rather than Tegucigalpa. There are direct connections around Central and North America, check with a travel agent for more details.
