Safety

By Mike Karanicolas

San Pedro Sula is an extremely safe city in the daytime, which transforms into a rather dodgy one at night. When the shops and banks around downtown close at 7 p.m., they take their armed security guards with them. Walking alone at night downtown is strongly discouraged. Take a taxi if you want to head to Zona Viva, or anywhere else outside of a radius of a couple of blocks. The Los Andes neighborhood where Tamarindo is located is quite a bit safer, though care should still be exercised after dark.
