By Mike Karanicolas

Built to protect the spiny-tailed iguana (a creature unique to Utila), the Iguana Research station makes an interesting half-day trip for wildlife enthusiasts. You can watch the critters in their natural mangrove habitat, as well as in terrariums designed for breeding. The station also offers tours of Pumpkin Hill, the Bat Caves and the mangrove forest near Rock Harbor.

Getting There
To get there – you're best asking directions, as formal addresses don't really exist on Utila. Head down from the dock and turn right between Samantha's 7-11 and Rose's Market. Head up four blocks until you get to Devon's Store and turn left.
