Utila Overview

V!VA User‘s Description

The least developed of the main Bay Islands, Utila is one of the cheapest diving destinations in the world. Although it has only one road and one town, it has over 50 dive sites and plenty of shops to keep prices competitive. The north coast has some of the best dive sites with spectacular drop-offs, canyons, caves, colorful reefs and more.

Transportation

Only 32 km (20 mi) from La Ceiba, Utila can be reached by ferry or plane from La Ceiba. Once you are on the island, you will probably find yourself walking, biking or renting water taxis to get around.

Hotels and Resorts

Unlike the other two large Bay Islands, Utila has no large resorts, although it does have a variety of accommodations. Most cater tobackpackers looking for bargains.

Orientation

Pumpkin Hill, at the eastern edge of the island near the airport, is the highest point on the island and allegedly where pirates like Henry Morgan stashed treasure in the many caves. Hunt for treasure or just enjoy the trails on foot or bike. There is a nearby coral beach where you can rent kayaks or canoes to explore more of this edge of the island.

Off the southwest corner of the island are the stunning Cayitos de Utila, a chain of small islands with excellent snorkeling and unlike Utila, no mosquitoes or sand flies! Camp on Water Caye, or soak in the culture of the fishing communities on Jewel and Pigeon Caye.
