Safety
The main safety concern on Utila has to do with the traffic. Streets are narrow and many motorcyclists drive recklessly fast along the main drag. Keep your wits about you and if you hear an engine, move as far over as you can. Here, pedestrians definitely don't have the right of way.
Due to Utila's small size and relative wealth, crime is not a big concern. The one exception to this is Bar in the Bush, particularly on Friday nights when the locals come out to drink. Avoid confrontations and DO NOT walk home by yourself, there have been numerous muggings.
Healthwise, Utila is home to a large and ravenous population of mosquitos. Anti-malarials are a good idea, if you're not already on them.
