Loreto is a pleasant, hot beach town located on the Sea of Cortes in Baja California Sur, not far from the state capital of La Paz. It is surrounded by considerable natural beauty, including the Bahía of Loreto marine park, which is known for scuba diving, and the Sierra La Giganta, a mountainous region ideal for hiking and camping.

The Sierra San Francisco features some ancient cave paintings, and you can also visit the baroque missions of San Javier and Nuestra Señora de Loreto, some of the oldest in all of Mexico. The bay area itself is known for attractive, tranquil beaches.
