San Ignacio Overview

+ Add a Photo

By Christopher Minster

San Ignacio is a small (population approximately 4,000), picturesque town which is a good base for visiting many of the local attractions, particularly some natural areas and some old cave paintings. To visit the cave paintings, it is first necessary to contact the INAH, located next to the mission. If you go with a tour, they’ll take care of the paperwork.

Founded by the Jesuits in 1728, this sleepy little town still features some of the best colonial architecture in all of Baja California. It is worthwhile to stroll around the colonial square and take in the timeless charm of San Ignacio. The region is also well-known to birdwatchers, as many species flock to the San Ignacio lagoon.
