Hidalgo Market

Market

By Christopher Minster

Guanajuato is known for several different locally produced handicrafts which delight visitors. The ceramics are excellent: you’ll find everything from plates, bowls and dishes to fancy bottles and pots. This is a traditional art for which the artisans of Guanajuato have been known for generations. There are a number of jewelry shops which specialize in gold and silver jewelry, and you can also find carved wooden sculptures, glasswork and even traditional toys.

Your first stop for shopping in Guanajuato should be the old Hidalgo Market, an enormous building located downtown on Avenida Juarez, which is impossible to miss: it looks vaguely like a cathedral. The cavernous interior is divided into sections dedicated to fresh meat and fish, fruits and vegetables, common-use items (plastic baskets, cooking pots, etc.) and locally made handicrafts. Check out the areas where the locals do their grocery shopping and then head over to the handicraft section to look for ceramics and other locally made treasures.
