International Cervantes Festival (Festival Internacional Cervantino, or FIC)

The Cervantes Festival, held every October in Guanajuato, is one of the most important cultural festivals in all of Mexico. It was initiated in 1972 to honor Miguel de Cervantes, Spanish author of the seventeenth-century classic novel Don Quixote. Today, the festival still honors Cervantes, but has expanded to include many more aspects of culture: it is not necessary to know anything about Cervantes to enjoy yourself and take part. The festival features music, dance and theatre and attracts thousands every year. The city looks forward to the festival: it’s a great party. If you’d like to attend the Cervantes Festival, be sure to book a hotel early as they’ll fill up fast.
