Casa De Las Artesanías - Market Morelia - Mexico

Morelia's Iglesia and ex-Convento de San Francisco is a massive Plateresque complex entrenched on the east side of the broad, bird-friendly Plaza Valladolid. Work on the buildings began in 1531, when the Franciscans took it upon themselves to erect the church and monastery in what was called the valley of Guayangareo, before the city of Valladolid was founded in 1541. Nowadays, however, the ex-Convento serves a secular purpose; it houses the Casa de las Artesanías, the artisan museum of Michoacán. This is a dangerous place to go if you like crafts, because the museum whets your appetite for expenditures great and small on items grand and junky in the large ground-floor shop and the small shops on the upper floors, where some crafts are actually being made. Some of the handicrafts on display and for sale include: ceramics from Tzintzuntzan, guitars from Paracho and gold-embellished lacquerware from Pátzcuaro. Sales at the cooperative enterprise benefit indigenous artisans. Also: Don't overlook the embroidery hanging on the columns around the courtyard; these colorful artworks are compelling first-person history lessons about Mexican village life.
