Octavio Paz

Octavio Paz, a Nobel Prize winning Poet, writer and diplomat, remains a beloved figure in Mexican literary culture since his death in 1989. A prolific poet, his work has been translated into English by several writers including Samuel Beckett and Elizabeth Bishop. His poems tended toward the surreal and influenced Mexican writers like Carlos Fuentes.

Many of Octavio Paz Poemas, or poems, are well-known, but his most famous work is Aguila o sol? (Eagle or Sun?). Written in 1951, this collection of poems that maps Mexico’s turbulent past, present and future, is considered to be one of this most significant works and an example of his visionary talent.

Paz was interested in philosophy and religion in his work. He was often influenced by Marxism, and existentialism as well as Buddhism and Hinduism. In his poem, Piedra de Sol (Sun Stone), written in 1957, he structures the poem after the Aztec calendar, in homage to his Mexican heritage.

The world holds an esteemed place in the literary cannon for Paz. Poemas de Paz, (Poems of Paz) are regarded as some of the finest examples of poetic work in the 20th Century.
