Turn east away from the ruins of Templo Mayor in the Zócalo and you’ll find yourself treading the cobbles of one of the city’s oldest streets. As well as being home to lofty cultural centers such as SCHP and the Museo Nacional de Culturas, its modern reincarnation is as a junk addicts paradise. Seemingly hundreds of shops selling cheap jewelry, stationery, bags and mass produced plastic products originating from China cater to a local and tourist crowd. Hectic it may be, but part of Calle Moneda’s charm is that it’s always throbbing with pedestrians, street musicians and hawkers loudly trying to persuade you to purchase things you don’t need. For more traditional souvenirs stick to the Zócalo end of the street.
