Head south from the Zócalo and you get to the Museo de La Ciudad de Mexico. Like many Mexico City museums, it’s housed in a converted colonial palace. The baroque architecture is one of the last structures of its kind in the city. Temporary exhibitions illustrate various aspects of Mexican culture from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. January/February 2009’s exhibition Lucha Libre, is well put together and imaginative, with champions belts, photos, interactive displays and masks. Permanent exhibits include the studio of painter/journalist/lawyer Joaquin Clausell and the palace’s chapel and vestry. Even if you don’t know much about Mexican culture, the exhibitions here are an easy introduction and sure to wet your appetite for more.
