Museo Nacional de las Culturas

The beautiful colonial building that is home to the Museo Nacional de las Culturas was once part of the Palacio Nacional. It later became the Casa de la Moneda (official Mint) and later the Anthropology Museum, before the Chapultepec version was built. Now it´s 23 rooms display bits and bobs such as ceramics and jewelry from countries around the world whose histories have been intertwined with Mexico´s. There´ s a cafeteria, library and bookshop to while away the afternoon and guided tours are available. At the moment (Jan 2009) the museum is closed for refurbishment and the guards are vague as to when it might open again.
