The Museo de la Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público (SHCP) is a real gem, slap bang in the Historic Center and a must for anyone with an interest in Mexican art. The impressive collection is wide-ranging, you can start off by viewing 18th century Madonnas, Rivera murals and Russian Orthodox icons and finish off examining gigantic billiard balls or bizarre sculptures entitled “Within the Fish´ s Eye”- and all for only $0.80! The art is housed in a lovely 16th century palace, formerly the residence of the Archbishop, which was built on the site of the temple dedicated to Texcatlipoca, the Aztec god who protected warriors. Excavated parts of the temple can still be seen within the building.
